POV di Charlotte

Ero grata che la pioggia avesse deciso di farci visita oggi... proteggendomi dalla tortura incessante che veniva di pari passo con il vivere in Glenstone Drive.

Mia madre agitava le sue pillole dal bagno vicino mentre le mie orecchie si contraevano al suono familiare... almeno, presto sarebbe stata addormentata.

Rimasi immobile, abbracciando le mie ginocchia magre al petto, mentre fissavo la finestra della mia camera da letto mentre la pioggia martellava contro il vetro.

Perché dovevano sempre scegliere me? La vita sarebbe stata molto più facile se non avessero scelto me...

Sapevo che la pioggia non mi avrebbe protetto per sempre, soprattutto perché domani avrei dovuto tornare a scuola.

D'altro canto, ci sarebbe stata finalmente una fine alla mia estate di torture.

Mia madre - che spesso fingeva di essere la madre dell'anno davanti ai nostri vicini - voleva sempre che io fossi fuori.

Anche quando imploravo e imploravo di rimanere dentro, lei spesso diceva che 'mi fa sembrare una cattiva madre', ma io già conoscevo la verità.

Era davvero perché lottava con la dipendenza e voleva che io fossi fuori dalla sua vista il più a lungo possibile... perché nel profondo mi odia.

I soli giorni in cui avrebbe effettivamente considerato di lasciarmi rimanere dentro sarebbero stati se il tempo fosse stato brutto - come oggi.

Appoggiai la testa contro il vetro freddo mentre il tempo cupo rimaneva un riflesso di come mi sentivo.

Loro tre erano sempre in giro qui, poiché i loro genitori vivevano tutti lungo la stessa strada.

Quando ero più giovane, e quando tutto era iniziato, avevo persino cercato con tutte le mie forze di convincere mia madre a trasferirsi, da qualche parte di bello, da qualche parte di caldo, ma il fastidio era molto più grande di quanto le importasse.

Da quando mio padre ci ha lasciato per un'altra donna, lei è peggiorata. Era una questione di tempo a questo punto perché ero certa che le pillole l'avrebbero uccisa presto...

"Lottie!" Grida, con una voce materna, che ingannerebbe chiunque nel pensare che fosse una buona madre.

"Sì?" Rispondo, guardando la pioggia rallentare - facendo accelerare il mio battito cardiaco.

"La pioggia sta smettendo... puoi uscire ora." Grida di nuovo, mentre chiudo gli occhi e respiro.

Niente di buono dura per sempre, vero?

"Mamma, non mi sento molto bene..." tento, prima che mi interrompa completamente e gridi di nuovo-

"Stai zitta! L'aria fresca ti aiuterà... ora fuori." Ribatte, mentre sospiro - sapendo fin troppo bene che non avrebbe lasciato andare questa cosa finché non avesse ottenuto ciò che voleva.

Da quando mio padre se n'è andato, ha faticato a guardarmi per più di dieci secondi alla volta...

Feci movimenti lenti, prendendomi il tempo per indossare vestiti più caldi. Poi raccolsi i calzini e gli stivali - muovendomi a passo di lumaca per indossarli e legare i lacci.

Forse potrei nascondermi da qualche parte in casa... così non dovrei uscire?

Valutai i pro e i contro dell'idea, decidendo che l'ultima volta che avevo provato quel trucco, mi aveva scoperto, e alla fine era andata peggio per me.

Niente cibo per una settimana, e non mi avrebbe lasciato rientrare fino a mezzanotte la maggior parte dei giorni... senza contare la botta che ho ricevuto per questo...

Mi contrassi al ricordo, sapendo che non ci voleva molto perché lei perdesse la calma... spesso mi incolpavo dato che sembrava che la maggior parte delle persone che avevo incontrato finora nella mia vita mi avesse lasciato o espresso il loro odio per me.

Sono io il problema.

Indossai l'ultimo stivale, legando i lacci a passo di lumaca mentre la mia mente correva con pensieri più deprimenti.

"Cazzo Charlotte! Che diavolo stai facendo?!" Sento mia madre gridare di nuovo, la sua voce con un leggero sibilo verso la fine.

"Arrivo!" Rispondo, forzando la risposta a uscire dalla mia gola mentre mi alzo e indosso una giacca scura da dietro la porta.

Spero di potermi nascondere da qualche parte e mimetizzarmi con l'esterno con questi colori cupi...

Scendo lentamente le scale, vedendola in piedi in fondo - in attesa della mia presenza. Le sue braccia erano strettamente incrociate sul petto, e il suo viso corrispondeva bene al suo linguaggio del corpo - con uno sguardo tagliente.

"Se ci metti così tanto a prepararti di nuovo, non ti lascerò rientrare affatto!" Quando fui a portata di mano, mi afferrò e mi trascinò giù per le scale, e mi portò verso la porta d'ingresso.

"Fuori di qui! E non tornare per almeno le prossime due ore!" Borbotta e mi apre la porta.

Esco sul portico, guardando la strada silenziosa mentre respiro profondamente, sentendo la porta sbattere dietro di me.

Scendo i gradini, decidendo che sarebbe meglio trovare un buon nascondiglio il prima possibile.

Mi tiro su il cappuccio e corro giù per il marciapiede nella direzione opposta alla casa di Jason e Tommy.

L'unico problema era che avrei comunque dovuto passare davanti alla casa degli Holden e sperare per il meglio... Ho pensato che evitare 2/3 delle loro case sulla strada fosse meglio di niente.

Mi avvicino al pickup blu navy appartenente al padre di Tommy mentre rallento i miei passi con cautela. Faticavo a vedere a causa delle grandi siepi che schermavano il sentiero che conduceva a casa sua...

Se riuscissi a superare e andare più in fondo alla strada, allora potrei arrivare al bosco per nascondermi!

Mi avvicino con cautela al pickup blu, non sentendo molto rumore oltre ai lievi fischi del vento.

Decisi di sporgere la testa, guardando nel giardino di Tommy, e tirai un sospiro di sollievo vedendo che il prato anteriore era vuoto.

Per un gruppo di sedicenni, sembravano sempre stare in strada davanti a una delle loro case. Si potrebbe pensare che avrebbero cose migliori da fare, magari anche feste a cui partecipare? Eppure eccoli qui, sempre a rendere la mia vita un inferno.

Proseguo lungo la strada, sentendomi leggermente meglio al pensiero che oggi potesse essere un altro giorno sicuro. Arrivo presto alla fine della strada, incontrando la linea degli alberi con un sentiero per i passeggiatori di cani che conduce nel bosco.

Anche se di notte era spaventoso, era dove mi sentivo più sicura durante il giorno - lontano da loro tre.

Entro nella linea degli alberi, vedendo un paio di vicini in lontananza che passeggiavano con i loro cani mentre respiro costantemente.

Almeno se ora succedesse qualcosa, loro vedrebbero...

Ammiro i fiori mentre l'umidità della pioggia fa risaltare i loro colori vivaci, continuando la mia passeggiata.

Come avrei fatto a passare due ore con questo freddo, non lo so...

Passo accanto ad alcuni dei nostri vicini familiari e offro loro un 'ciao' mentre si girano per tornare giù per il sentiero di ghiaia verso le loro case.

Sembrava che fossi sola ora...

Avrei voluto, in momenti come questi, avere il mio telefono, dove poter passare il tempo guardando video casuali o giocando a giochi stupidi come fanno gli altri ragazzi a scuola.

"Beh, beh, non puoi proprio fare a meno di noi, vero troia? Non potevi aspettare fino a domani per vederci a scuola, eh?" Sento il tono beffardo familiare di Holden, facendo irrigidire il mio corpo.

"Ci stai seguendo ora, vero?" Jason ride mentre mi giro per vedere i tre avvicinarsi a me, rivelandosi da dietro gli alberi.

Devono sapere ora che è qui che vengo a cercare di nascondermi da loro...

La mia bocca si aprì e si chiuse mentre il mio cuore batteva forte per la paura dei tre ragazzi che erano più alti di me.

Si avvicinavano abbastanza da farmi sentire la puzza di sigarette e dopobarba.

"Vuoi provare a scappare oggi, o vuoi rendere questa volta facile per noi?" Tommy chiede, spingendo la mia spalla mentre sussulto all'azione.

Devo provare a scappare?!

Ogni volta che ho provato a scappare, mi hanno preso!

Non sono veloce, quindi qual è il punto?!

Devo solo restare qui con loro e farla finita?!

Ma se decidessero di uccidermi questa volta? E se esagerassero?!

"Sembra che tu voglia restare... non preoccuparti, non ti segneremo il viso... ti terremo carina per il tuo primo giorno di ritorno a scuola!" Tommy (che spesso era il capo dei tre) tira fuori il familiare coltello a serramanico dalla tasca.

Non oggi... qualsiasi cosa ma non questo...

"P-Per favore..." sussurro appena mentre ridono e scuotono la testa al mio inutile supplicare.

"Tienila ferma," ordina Tommy, mentre gli altri due ridono e fanno un rapido movimento verso di me, trascinandomi fuori dal sentiero e dentro gli alberi mentre i miei occhi si riempiono di lacrime per il dolore spaventoso che stavo per sopportare.

Per favore, Dio, non lasciarli uccidermi ancora...
