Chapter 1
"Ikaw ang aking munting munting mansanas, kahit gaano kita kamahal ay di sapat..." Alas-diyes ng umaga, sa isang madilim at masikip na paupahang kwarto, tumunog ang isang makabagong at kaaya-ayang ringtone.
"Sino bang istorbo sa tulog ko!" Galit na galit si Yan Jing na nagising sa tawag. Kinuha niya ang telepono at nakita niyang isang hindi kilalang numero ang tumatawag. Kaya't sinagot niya ito nang masama ang tono, "Sino to?"
"Magandang araw po, ito po ang Jingtong Express, may package po kayo na dumating, paki-baba na lang po para pirmahan." Mula sa kabilang linya, narinig niya ang isang magandang boses ng babae.
"Oh, sige, hintayin mo lang." Naalala ni Yan Jing na may binili siyang libro online ilang araw na ang nakalipas. Kaya't kahit na antok pa, bumangon siya, hindi na nag-toothbrush, at bumaba ng hagdan.
Nakatira si Yan Jing sa isang lumang kalye na may makikitid na eskinita. Hindi makapasok ang delivery van kaya't palaging naghihintay sa bungad ng kalye. Pagkababa niya, agad niyang nakita ang isang van na may nakasulat na "Jingtong Express."
Mabilis na lumapit si Yan Jing. Tuwing kukuha siya ng package, pakiramdam niya parang ikakasal siya, may konting kaba at excitement.
"Aba, babae ang nag-deliver ngayon?" Pagdating sa harap ng van, nakita niya ang isang dalagang nasa dalawampung taong gulang, nakatali ang buhok sa ponytail, at maganda ang ngiti.
"Magandang araw po, kukuha po ba kayo ng package? Paki-abot na lang po ng ID." Sa propesyonal na tono, sinabi ng delivery girl kay Yan Jing.
Hindi na nagsayang ng oras si Yan Jing, kinuha ang kanyang ID mula sa kanyang bulsa at iniabot ito.
Pagkatapos niyang ma-verify, kinuha ng delivery girl ang maliit na package mula sa van at iniabot kay Yan Jing kasama ang isang ballpen. "Paki-pirmahan po dito."
"Sige." Sabi ni Yan Jing habang bumubuka ang bibig, at dahil sa masamang hininga, napaatras ng dalawang hakbang ang delivery girl.
Pagkatapos pirmahan ni Yan Jing, huminga muna ng malalim ang delivery girl bago bumalik para kunin ang resibo.
"Salamat ha." Sabi ni Yan Jing habang itinataas ang package. Hindi niya maintindihan kung bakit umiiwas ang delivery girl kahit na nagpasalamat siya.
"Siguro dahil sobrang gwapo ko, nahihiya siyang lumapit?" Nagtaka si Yan Jing, at sa kabila ng pag-aalinlangan, kinumpirma niya ang ideyang iyon. Hindi niya napansin ang disgusted na mukha ng delivery girl, at umalis na siya.
"Mahal kong libro, hayaan mong tulungan kita maghubad." Pagbalik sa kwarto, kinuha agad ni Yan Jing ang gunting. Ang package ay nakabalot ng maraming layer ng tape, mahirap buksan gamit ang kamay.
"Shhh." Napunit ang tape sa ilalim ng gunting, at sa wakas, nakita ni Yan Jing ang kanyang hinahanap-hanap na libro. Kahit nasa digital age na, mas gusto pa rin niya ang mga papel na libro.
"Hmm, maganda, maganda." Amoy ang natatanging amoy ng tinta sa papel, gumanda ang mood ni Yan Jing. Kinuha niya ang libro at binuklat ang ilang pahina, napansin niyang maganda ang kalidad ng papel at maayos ang pag-print.
"Ano to?" Habang binubuklat niya ang libro, may nahulog na isang maliit na booklet. Kinuha niya ito at nakita ang isang asul na cover na may nakasulat na "Medical Classic" sa lumang Chinese characters.
"Promo ba ng seller, buy one take one?"
Habang nagmumuni-muni, binuksan niya ang booklet.
Pagbukas, nagulat siya. Puno ng mga kakaibang bagay ang booklet, tulad ng mga diagram ng katawan na may acupuncture points, at mga halamang gamot na may kakaibang hugis, may kasamang mga annotations.
"Naloloko ba ako nito?" Pinagmasdan niya ang ilang pahina. Hindi siya doktor kaya wala siyang alam sa medisina. Hindi niya alam kung totoo o epektibo ang mga nilalaman ng booklet. Sa tingin niya, baka promo lang ito ng seller para makakuha ng magandang review.
"Bahala na, libre naman." Walang pakialam niyang itinapon sa gilid ang booklet at sinimulang basahin ang kanyang nobela, ito ang talagang kinahihiligan niya.
Kapag tutok sa isang bagay, parang mabilis lumipas ang oras. Tulad ni Yan Jing, sobrang absorbed sa pagbabasa ng nobela. Nang marinig niyang kumukulo na ang tiyan niya, saka lang niya naibaba ang libro at kinuha ang cellphone. Alas-dos na ng hapon.
"Magluluto na lang ako ng kahit ano..." Tumayo si Yan Jing. Kahit pangalawang lungsod lang ang Qinghai, mataas pa rin ang presyo ng mga bilihin. Kaya't bihira siyang kumain sa labas, mas gusto niyang magluto sa bahay. Isa siyang batang probinsya, marunong siyang magluto.
Bukod pa rito, may mas malaking problema si Yan Jing. Dalawang buwan na mula nang magtapos siya ng high school, pero wala pa siyang makuhang trabaho. Paubos na ang ilang libong piso na dala niya mula sa probinsya. Kung hindi siya makakahanap ng trabaho agad, hindi na niya mababayaran ang ilang daang pisong upa.
"Mahirap ang buhay!" Sa maliit na kwarto na nagsisilbing kusina, sala, at kwarto, napabuntong-hininga si Yan Jing habang nakatingin sa kisame. Binuksan niya ang second-hand na maliit na refrigerator at tiningnan kung ano pa ang pwedeng kainin.
At sa kanyang pagkabigla, dalawang pipino na lang ang natira sa loob ng ref.
