El salón está lleno de flores, la luz es tenue y romántica. El novio se encuentra al final del pasillo. Las puertas se abren y lo muestran de pie, inquieto pero feliz. La música comienza.

Justo en la entrada, a solo unos metros del novio, aparece una mujer, pero las emociones en su rostro no concuerdan con las del hombre; más bien, parece molesta.

—¡¡Paren la música!! —exclama ella a la orquesta, caminando a paso rápido en dirección al hombre y pasando de largo junto a él.

El novio voltea, siguiéndola con la mirada, confundido.

—¿Qué pasa? ¿Hay algún problema? ¿Hice algo mal? ¿No me paré en el lugar correcto?

—Sí, pero no es contigo, Mateo. Tú estás bien donde estás —ella lo observa un segundo—. Sabes que… en realidad, deberías estar un poco más a la derecha. Si no, el día de la ceremonia el camarógrafo no podrá captar bien tu rostro cuando veas a tu novia haciendo la marcha nupcial.

—Perdón, Sabrina. Siempre se me olvida. Ya es la tercera vez que meto la pata.

—Tranquilo, para eso son los ensayos.

—Lo sé, pero no entiendo cómo siempre se me olvida lo mismo. ¡Lo único que tengo que hacer es estar de pie, y ni eso me sale bien! —se afloja la corbata, frustrado. Era el último ensayo antes del gran día, y el primero que hacía sin su prometida. Ambos habían acordado no verse una semana antes de la boda, para agregarle más emoción al evento.

—Vamos a hacer esto: el día de la boda te dejaré una pequeña marca en el suelo —la mujer tomó un pedazo de tiza de una mesa cercana y dibujó una X en la alfombra—. Asegúrate de pararte sobre ella, y ya no tendrás que preocuparte por nada más que decir tus votos. Que, por cierto, le di una copia a tu padrino, y yo tengo otra, por si acaso. Plastificadas. Es algo que aprendí por las malas en mis primeras bodas.

—A Mariana y a mí nos alegra tanto haberte contratado como la organizadora de nuestra boda. No sabemos cómo agradecerte, por tanto.

—No digas nada más. Es mi trabajo hacer que su gran día sea, como mínimo, perfecto. Además de impedir que los novios pierdan la cabeza en el proceso.

El celular del novio sonó.

—Disculpe, señorita Sabrina, me tengo que ir. Voy a cenar con mi cuñado esta noche. ¿Hay algo más que deba mejorar?

—No, nada más. Puedes irte. Pero no te desveles. No creo que a Mariana le guste verte al final del pasillo con una bolsa debajo de cada ojo.

El novio asintió y se fue, dejando a Sabrina sola con la orquesta y los encargados de la decoración.

—Muy bien, ahora que estamos solos… —la mujer en traje de cabellos azabaches, volvió a donde estaban los músicos—. Esa no fue la canción que habíamos acordado.

—¿Cómo qué no? ¿No se suponía que tocáramos la canción de esta película del barco que se hunde? —el líder de la orquesta no parecía nada contento. Pero claro, ¿quién lo estaría trabajando tan tarde un viernes?

—No. Esa es para la boda del domingo. La de mañana debe ser la del cantante pelirrojo —buscó rápidamente en la carpeta que tenía en sus brazos, sacando la partitura correcta—. Esta es.

—¿Otra vez esta canción? —se quejó uno de los violinistas, secundado por los demás—. Ya es la quinta boda este mes.

—Eso es lo que quieren los novios —cerró la carpeta con fuerza—. Cuando alguno de ustedes se case, podrá tocar la canción que prefiera —caminó de vuelta al comienzo del largo pasillo—. De acuerdo, una vez más antes de irnos. Y los de las luces, hagamos de nuevo otra prueba más con el cambio de iluminación al entrar la novia.

Sabrina aplaudió como señal para iniciar. Caminó recorriendo el lugar con dos propósitos: el primero, inspeccionar que todo estuviera perfecto para el gran día. Y segundo, por su propio bien, porque sabía que si se quedaba tranquila —fuera sentada o de pie— terminaría quedándose dormida. Estaba exhausta.

Eran las dos de la mañana cuando Sabrina al fin llegó a su casa. Pero no podría relajarse hasta llegar a su habitación. A pesar de estar a nada de cumplir los treinta años, ella aún parecía una adolescente entrando como ladrón a su propia casa, solo para evitar despertar a alguno de los miembros de su familia con los que compartía techo.

Después de muchos años había logrado desarrollar la habilidad de caminar a oscuras por su casa sin tropezar con nada en el camino a su habitación.

Cerró la puerta con cuidado. Las crueles bisagras chillaban, exigiendo que les echaran aceite o algo para silenciarlas.

Al fin en su espacio, se quitó la ropa y se puso lo primero que encontró antes de tirarse al colchón.

—Al fin. No sabes cuánto te extrañé, amor mío. Nunca más nos separemos —cuánto había anhelado acostarse en su cama.

Se arropó, tomó su celular y abrió la app de notas:

“Lista de cosas por hacer el domingo, número diez: engrasar las bisagras de las puertas.”

Ya eran diez cosas por hacer. Sería un domingo ocupado.

Antes de poder rendirse a Morfeo, repasó cómo sería su sábado. La boda sería casi en la noche, no vería a nadie hasta las dos de la tarde. Ya había adelantado todo antes del fin de semana.

Sonrió, mientras dejaba su teléfono en la mesa junto a la cama. Podía darse el gusto de dormir hasta el mediodía. Necesitaba recuperar energías.

Pero qué equivocada estaba.

Eran las seis de la mañana cuando recibió un mensaje de su jefa:

"Reunión de emergencia a las siete en la oficina".

Y así fue, con bolsas bajo los ojos y menos de tres horas de sueño, que Sabrina tuvo que salir corriendo de su casa al trabajo. No le había dado tiempo ni siquiera de desayunar, y mucho menos de tomar su preciado café para poder ser una adulta funcional.

No tenía auto, por lo que tuvo que tomar el autobús. El tráfico estaba espantoso. Pero, aun así, pese a todos los inconvenientes, pudo llegar unos minutos antes de la reunión.

—Justo a tiempo —exclamó, viendo su reloj. No quería escuchar a la secretaria de su jefa si la veía llegar tarde. No sabía por qué, pero esa mujer parecía tener algo en su contra.

Cuando las puertas del ascensor se abrieron, Sabrina se apresuró a salir. A pasos agigantados dobló la esquina, sin notar a la persona que venía desde el otro lado ni el café que esta llevaba en la mano.

Lamentablemente, no solo ella y la otra persona terminaron en el suelo, sino que, además, quedaron empapados de café caliente.

—Perdón, perdón, no lo vi —Sabrina no hallaba qué decir ni qué hacer. Como si esa mañana no fuera ya lo suficientemente estresante. Pero pensó que, después de esto, nada podría ser peor… hasta que identificó a la persona con la que se había tropezado.

—Tenías que ser tú —se quejó el hombre, mirándola molesto.
