*Lief dagboek,
Wat begon als een verrassend goede dag, veranderde zonder waarschuwing in een nachtmerrie. Terwijl ik weer onder de vloerplanken zit te wachten tot de nachtmerrie voorbij is, denk ik aan alle keren dat ik in deze kleine kamer moest doorbrengen. De junk die het appartement vóór ons bewoonde, had de kamer gemaakt om zijn drugsvoorraad te verbergen. Soms ruik ik nog steeds de geur van chemicaliën waarvan ik aanneem dat ze zijn gebruikt om zijn drugs te maken. Echter, nu begin ik sereniteit te vinden in deze kleine kamer. Ik heb moeite gedaan om het comfortabeler te maken voor mijn kleine verblijf hier.
Boven mij hoor ik de stemmen van de mannen die mijn moeder zijn komen bezoeken. Deze mannen komen vaak langs. Wanneer ze komen, hoor ik het gedempte geschreeuw en gekreun van mijn mama, gevolgd door geschreeuw en ruzies over betalingen.
Soms heeft mama zelfs blauwe plekken en littekens op haar lichaam. Ik begrijp niet waarom mama me nooit vertelt waarom deze mannen langskomen. Ze zegt dat ik me in deze kleine kamer moet verstoppen totdat ze ons veilige woord roept. Het is als verstoppertje, maar in plaats van dat ik tot tien tel en haar vind, moet ik wachten tot ik "Tjoeke tjoeke" hoor voordat ik naar buiten kan komen en haar kan vinden. De laatste tijd komen deze mannen vaak langs. Ze zei dat ze meer klanten had gekregen door haar werk en dat de zaken goed gingen, waardoor ze genoeg geld had gespaard om mij naar een kostschool in Mariners Bay te sturen. Ik wist dat ze loog omdat ik haar een tas vol geld had zien meenemen van een man op het parkeerterrein buiten ons appartement. Ik begrijp niet waarom ze tegen me liegt of waarom ze wil dat ik vertrek, maar ze zei dat ik veilig zou zijn op de kostschool en dat niemand me daar zou kunnen aanraken. Ze zei dat ze niet wilde dat ik hetzelfde leven zou hebben als zij.
Ik heb nooit echt geweten wat voor werk mama doet. Ze verlaat nooit het huis om ergens te werken zoals de andere ouders op school. Ze plagen me allemaal over het werk van mijn mama. De jongens zeggen dat mijn mama een hoer is, maar toen ik mama vroeg wat dat betekende, zei ze dat het betekent dat ze een goed persoon is. Ik wil haar niet geloven omdat ik diep van binnen weet dat ze geen goed persoon is. Ik weet dat ze probeerde me weg te houden van die Sumo-man die elke vrijdag komt om zijn geld op te halen. Mama zei dat hij haar baas was en dat hij soms degene was die mama de blauwe plekken op haar lichaam gaf. Mama had me strikte instructies gegeven om bij hem uit de buurt te blijven. Hij keek me raar aan toen mama hem vertelde dat ik aanstaande vrijdag 13 zou worden. Ze wilde een vrije dag om met mij te vieren, maar hij zei nee. Daarom verstop ik me vandaag, op mijn verjaardag, in deze kamer terwijl mama haar mannenbezoekers heeft.
Ik heb vandaag niet eens de kans gehad om Brownie te ontmoeten. Hij moet aan de rand van het bos op me wachten zoals hij elke dag doet. Hij is de enige vriend die ik heb. Ik weet dat ik veel over hem praat in mijn dagboek, maar hij is gewoon zo geweldig. Zijn chocoladebruine vacht is de reden waarom ik hem die naam heb gegeven. Het is zo zacht en pluizig. Ik kan urenlang mijn handen erdoorheen laten glijden. Mama weet niets van Brownie, maar misschien is het tijd dat ik haar over hem vertel, zodat ze elkaar gezelschap kunnen houden terwijl ik weg ben. Misschien kan Brownie mama beschermen tegen die Sumo-man, net zoals hij mij had beschermd tegen die dronken mannen toen ik hem voor het eerst ontmoette. Ik vraag me af of ik hem nog zal zien zodra mama me naar de kostschool stuurt.
Ik wil niet weggaan. Ik wil niet wegblijven van mama en Brownie. Mama zei dat het nu belangrijker was dan ooit dat ik vertrok. Ze is erg bezorgd om mij. Ze zegt dat ik op een dag zal begrijpen waarom het zo belangrijk is dat ik wegga.
Ik denk dat ik de volgende maandag vertrek. Mama heeft gezegd dat ze me zal bezoeken wanneer ze kan. Hopelijk kan ze op een dag in Mariners Bay bij me komen wonen. Ik vraag me af of ik haar kan overtuigen om me Brownie mee te laten nemen. Zou de kostschool me toestaan een grote huisdierwolf in mijn kamer te hebben? Hoewel hij groot en eng is, is hij erg vriendelijk. Misschien kan mama hem na mijn vertrek ook meenemen om mij te bezoeken.
