Chapter 1
Hilda's POV
"Ugly bastard, it's a terrible thing to see your ugly light gold eyes and red markings every day!" One as*hole pinned my head to the ground so my face was pressed against the cold ground and pounded his fist against my back. More jerks' laughter came from behind.
These bastards always took pleasure in bullying me, perhaps to ease their bitterness at being reprimanded by their masters. They were lowly slaves, and I was the outlet for lowly slaves.
"Ugly bastard, why don't you say something?" The bastard asked, pulling my hair hard.
I gritted my teeth and tried not to make a sound, so many years of experience told me that resistance would only bring me more beatings, so I'd rather keep silent and let the beating end sooner.
The punches came down like rain, the pain blurred my consciousness, and I didn't know how long it was before I heard them say in a lost voice. "What a bore!"
I strained my ears to hear the footsteps around me, and only after making sure they were really gone did I dare to get up from the ground.
Well, the next task was to take care of the wound. I looked at the wound on my arm and breathed a sigh of relief that the calamity was finally over.
I dragged my tired and sore body on the way back to the basement, and maids with fresh food and beautiful clothes passed by me to go and offer them to the master.
This damn place was a comfortable paradise for some people, but for me it's hell. I never enjoyed warmth here, but only hunger, pain and humiliation accompanied me every day.
However, I was a person who loved my life, despite the fact that it was so difficult to live here, I was not willing to give up my life, after all, this was the only thing that my parents left me.
"Hey, little thing, as you can see, I got beaten up by those bastards again." I pushed open the basement door and greeted the spiders who were quietly knotting their webs. They had always been my good roommates and never disliked me for anything. As the lowest servant, I also had to live in this shitty basement and be neighbors with the spiders.
I threw myself on the bed and closed my eyes tiredly, which would help my wounds recover a little faster. For some reason, my ability to heal myself was a little less than the other vampires.
Actually, I wasn't disliked by other vampires from the beginning. Before I was 10 years old, I was more popular than other vampires due to my red eyes, a symbol of pure blood, and my beautiful looks, even though I was just an orphan picked up by the dean from the deep forest.
The wealthy Howard family took me out of the orphanage when I was 3 years old. I grew up slowly and became more beautiful, and they saw fit to betroth me to the youngest son of the Campbell family, a vampire aristocracy.
I thought everything would go smoothly and I would have a happy life, but fate was such a tormentor that everything changed when I was 10 years old. The red eyes that showed the purity of my bloodline suddenly turned pale gold, and red stripes sprang up on my forehead. To make matters worse, I lost my desire for blood and became interested in human food, which was never allowed in a vampire family! So they began to loathe me and sent me back to the orphanage.
The orphanage had a rule that orphans who had not been adopted by the age of 12 would be bought by the major nobles as slaves. But because of my bloodline and eccentricities, no one wanted to buy me out until I was 14 years old.
Mr. Cavendish, a brutal nobleman, came to the orphanage to select servants. They were so notoriously evil that no one wanted to be a servant in their house. The unlucky one who was chosen used some tricks to make me replace her, so I became the unlucky one to be brought back by Mr. Cavendish as a servant.
The Cavendish family was as brutal as rumors had it, and being a servant there was a very painful thing to do. They hated my looks and quirks and always used me as a tool to vent their anger, often beating me just like they did earlier.
I had no friends there and was the target of everyone's ostracism and bullying.
A rough knock on the door interrupted my thoughts and my heart felt like it was being pulled hard because I knew nothing good was going to happen.
I braced myself to get up and open the door, and the condescending and mean-spirited butler appeared before me with a group of maids.
"Hilda, you're slacking off again." The butler's little eyes swept over the wounds on my body, something he always saw and pretended he didn't, because a vampire with impure blood and quirks was not worth his concern, and I was afraid he would want to kick me twice when he was upset.
I was silent and did not refute him, trying to make him feel my obedience. After living there for so long, I had long learned to endure, resistance would only invite more retaliation.
"I'm not going to pursue your laziness this time, here's an important matter, Miss Cavendish has asked you to serve an important guest, I'm telling you, this guest is very important, if you mess up, Miss and I will not let you go." The housekeeper kept chattering, but I couldn't listen to it anymore.
My heart was filled with doubt as to why Miss Cavendish had arranged for me to serve this honored guest. Every time there was an important guest, a bunch of maids would rush to serve him, because if I was lucky enough to be seen and become his mistress, I could leave my status as a lowly servant and not have to worry about my life at any time.
As the most humble servant here, such good things naturally never fall into my lap.
"Hilda! Are you listening to me?" The housekeeper probably sensed that I was distracted and looked a little angry.
I nodded my head to show that I understood it all. The butler didn't give me a hard time, just gave me a disgruntled look and led me down the hall.
Along with me, there were many maids. I quietly observed them and found that they were also not of pure blood and were not pretty looking, completely different from the maids who went to take care of the noble guests from before. It was probably the first time in this castle that such maids were allowed to serve the honored guests.
The butler walking in front of us looked back at us and spoke again. "You'd better not think anything of this honored guest, this guest's status is out of your league. Remember, you're only lowly servants, and only our noble Miss Cavendish deserves him. And you must cheer up to serve, even a little mistake, Miss Cavendish will not let you go!"
Hearing the housekeeper's words, everyone became cautious and afraid, because Miss Cavendish was known for her brutality, and it would not end well if she was messed with. Rumor had it that one of the maids accidentally broke her vase and was actually killed.
I also tried to keep myself focused to avoid doing something wrong for a while.
I kept my head down and followed the butler to the hall, which was decorated in a more ornate way than the usual banquet, highlighting the importance of this distinguished guest. I joined the other servants in setting up the tableware and serving the food. My eyes peeked over to the side and found that almost everyone was like me, daring to look down at the dignified face of the honored guest due to the butler's warning. Although I didn't dare to look up, I could vaguely sense the buzz around him, and this honored guest must be elegantly holding his glass of wine and exchanging pleasantries with those people.
The gorgeous skirt swept past me, a fragrance came to my face, Miss Cavendish twisted her enchanting body and walked past me, apparently, that this dress and posture was exactly for that noble guest.
Looking at the servant's clothes on myself, I couldn't help but think of all those past events. If I hadn't changed at the age of 10, I would have been just like Miss Cavendish, with flowers and the prettiest clothes and everyone's love.
"Mr. Campbell, welcome!" Miss Cavendish called out a name in a delicate and moving voice, with a sheepish affection that made one's scalp tingle.
The moment I heard the guest's name, all the blood rushed to my brain and my eyes became black.
Campbell, I had not heard this surname for too long. I couldn't help but look up in the direction of the honored guest and instantly saw the face of the honored guest in the crowd, it was him, the youngest son of the Campbell family, John Campbell, my former fiancé.
We used to play together in the garden, and he was always very dear to me, and because of my beauty, the Howard family soon realized that I could be a tool to enlist the Campbell family, so they made a marriage contract for us.
But since I was returned to the orphanage by the Howard family, I lost contact with him, and I never expected to meet again in a place like this.
My heart was beating extremely fast. His appearance might be a good opportunity for me, and he, who was regarded as a valued guest by the Cavendish family, could surely change my fate. When I thought of this, my hand trembled uncontrollably, as if I saw the light.
Yes, I'd be out of this f*cking hell in no time!
I was so excited that the bottle filled with blood in my hand almost slipped, but fortunately I reacted in time to catch it, but still a step too late, a little plasma splashed to the ground.
God, I ended up screwing up. I looked at the plasma on the floor and was scared to death.
"Hilda! What are you doing!" Not to my surprise, the butler's voice with anger rang in my ears again.
