Chapter 69
Sabrina POV
I traveled next back to the Silverfang pack, feeling better than I had in ages.
Not only did I have a plan in place to take care of my father, Nathan and the trashy Omega, I’d also secured the assistance of some incredibly powerful allies.
Allies who wouldn’t hesitate to slit someone’s throat if it was what I told them to do.
And wasn’t that a delicious little thought? I could put a list together, all the people I wanted to have removed. And then just hand that list over to one of them.
I laughed out loud when I realized that, driving with the windows down and my hair blowing in the wind.
No one, absolutely no one, was going to stand in my way now.
I arrived at the Silverfang pack after sunset, ready to play the part of the loving fiancee and devoted campaign manager.
Roles I played quite well, if I did say so myself.
Playing a role was a perfectly comfortable position for me to be in. After all, I’d been playing the part of a Princess for almost my entire life.
With Martha’s help I’d learned exactly how to behave, what to say, what to wear to fool everyone in the Royal pack. Even the Royal Alpha himself.
All while hiding my real identity, and my true motivations, from almost everyone in the entire world.
So pretending to be just a bratty Royal princess for a little bit longer wasn’t going to be difficult at all.
Walking into Nathan’s home, I was happy not to spot his whiny little pup for once.
That stupid kid always seemed to be underfoot, asking about his nanny and saying how much he missed her.
Even after all the time I spent playing with him, taking him to the park and getting him treats, he still wanted Claire for some reason. He had a Royal Princess right in front of him, yet longed to be reunited with an Omega.
Little brat.
But it was later in the evening, and Andy must have already been in bed. I found Nathan alone in his living room, the lights dim and a glass of whiskey in his hand.
“Hello, lover,” I said, slipping off my shoes. “Taking an evening off?”
Nathan took a long slow sip of whiskey. “I’m not in the mood for acting like we like each other tonight, Sabrina.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Well, aren't you in a mood? What brought this on?” I asked as I sat on the arm of the overstuffed leather chair where he sat. “Trouble at the office?”
Nathan was silent for so long I wondered if he just wasn’t going to answer. Then he sighed and laid his head against the back of the chair with his eyes closed.
“I went to the Royal pack, to see Claire.”
I bit back my kneejerk response to hearing the Omega’s name, and let him continue.
“She was in her office at the clinic, with Dr. Baldwin. He was giving her a shoulder massage! But they claimed it was a healing session. She said it was for her headaches.”
He made a sound, clearly not believing a word of it.
So the poor lovesick Alpha was feeling a bit of jealousy, was he?
How wonderful.
“Hmm,” I said, pretending to think. “Now that you mention it, I guess I have noticed how close the two of them seemed to have become. She even went as his date to her banquet!”
“What??” He sat up so fast whiskey sloshed out of the glass and onto his hand.
“Oh yes,” I said. “She was his date that night. I think I saw you dance with her once, but the rest of the evening she danced every song with him. Didn’t you know?”
He shook the whiskey off his hands. A few drops flew onto my blouse, surely staining the silk, but I was having too much fun to mind.
“No,” he said ruefully. “I didn’t.”
I tsked. “And now I’ve made you more upset. How rude of me. Listen: let me make you a nice relaxing cup of tea?”
Clearly suspicious of how nice I was behaving without anybody watching - without anyone to perform for - Nathan eventually agreed.
Probably thinking, What harm could a cup of tea do?
Laughing to myself, I went into the kitchen.
If he only knew.
With a glance behind me to make sure I was alone, I added a small packet of my mother’s herbs in with the loose leaf tea.
A very special packet, filled with a precise mix of herbs.
I took the tea back into the living room, where Nathan was still brooding over his whiskey.
“Here, darling, drink this. It’ll help keep you from getting a headache from that whiskey.”
He took the steaming mug I handed him and blew on the tea before taking a sip. And then another. And a third.
One thing about Mom’s recipes, they always tasted delicious.
And they always did the trick.
Within moments of finishing his tea Nathan began to show the effects. His eyelids drooped, and he slumped in his chair. When I told him to hand me his mug, he did so like a dog obeying a command.
I called for the butler.
“The Alpha has had a long day,” I said. “Help me take him up to his room.”
With his help we were able to pull Nathan up out of his chair, and slowly lead him up the stairs.
In the bedroom, the butler helped Nathan change while I turned down his sheets. Once Nathan was settled in the bed, I dismissed the servant.
And I went downstairs to get my bag.
I took my time changing into the outfit I brought along in my large purse, knowing there was no need to hurry. Nathan was going to be out for hours.
Once I was dressed in my nightgown, I slid into bed beside my fiancee.
And I slept like a baby.
Nathan POV
Sunlight streaming over my face woke me, and it took me a moment to realize I was in my bed.
The last thing I remembered from the night before was being down in the living room, a glass in my hand, a swirl of anger and suspicion still crowding my mind.
Exactly how much had I had to drink?
A small sound beside me drew my attention, and I froze.
I wasn’t alone.
Someone else was in my bed.
For one wild moment my wolf shouted Claire!
Had she come home??
But no - that wasn’t Claire’s smell on the sheets. That was…
Sabrina?!
I rolled over and stared at her, dumbfounded.
What was going on?
My movement must have been enough to wake her, because she opened her eyes and smiled at me sleepily, then yawned and stretched, revealing a very skimpy nightgown.
“Good morning, darling,” she said. “I hope you slept well. I certainly did.”
Leaning over, she kissed me while I lay there, frozen.
“Last night was wonderful,” she whispered. Then she got up and went into the bathroom. A moment later I heard the shower turn on.
I laid there, horrified at myself.
Had I really cheated on Claire?!
