Chapter 38

Third POV

A Royal wolf running into the waiting room of the clinic had caused a panic as everyone scattered, trying to avoid him. A frenzied wolf was a very dangerous person to be around, and no one wanted to chance being bitten or scratched by those razor sharp claws.

And then Dr. Green rushed in, and shifted.

Not only did she have a wolf - she had a beautiful, powerful silver wolf.

The sight of that rare silver wolf stunned the gathered patients and staff. Everyone froze.

For a long silent moment, no one said a word.

After the wild rumors that Dr. Green was wolfless, the scene in front of them was just too shocking.

Not only did she have what looked like a very powerful wolf, it was a rare silver wolf as well.

But…only Royal wolves were silver.

What was going on here? What did this mean?

But while everyone else was shocked into motionlessness, seeing Dr. Green’s wolf had a very different effect on the Royal Alpha.

Her wolf closely resembled the wolf of his beloved late wife. The sight of it first surprised and then calmed his own frenzied wolf long enough for him to finally take back control of himself.

As he started to calm down, he was able to shift back.

Now rather than a raging powerful wolf, the crowd stared at the old Royal Alpha, who swayed with weariness. The transformations had exhausted him.

No one knew what to think.

Dr. Green shifted back as well, and kindly led the confused and weary Royal out of the waiting room, back down the hall to the exam rooms.

Leaving a stunned and totally confused group of people behind them.

“H-how could this be?” stuttered a well-dressed woman. “Everyone said she had no wolf. But - you saw it, right? We all saw what just happened.”

“How could she have a wolf, though?” asked a man wearing heavy workboots. “And one that looks so powerful??”

“And silver!” said a teenager with pink hair. “I thought only the Royals had silver wolves.”

What did this mean?!

Claire POV

I led the Royal Alpha back to his exam room, walking slowly. He was obviously exhausted by the ordeal that just happened.

And I was feeling pretty shaky myself.

I’d just revealed my wolf to a waiting room full of patients, as well as doctors and nurses.

Now everyone knew that I had a wolf, something I’d been conflicted about revealing.

While people knowing I had a wolf would help deal with the rumors I’d heard about me being wolfless, I wasn’t so sure I wanted people to know just how powerful my wolf was.

Or the fact that it was a rare silver wolf.

I was well aware that most, maybe all, silver wolves were Royals. I just didn’t know what it meant that I had one.

Me, a lowly Omega.

Now people were going to ask even more questions about who I was and where I was from.

Questions I knew I couldn’t answer.

Would they believe me if I told them that this was all just some strange fluke? Some genetic accident?

Probably not.

Reaching the exam room, I put my worries aside and focused on getting the Royal Alpha back up onto the exam table so I could finally begin our session.

I suspected his frenzy had been caused by a worsening of his condition, and I wanted to see just how deep inside his mind the issue went.

Our sessions had allowed me to get a good sense of what was going on inside the Royal Alpha, and I secretly wondered if I could contain the frenzy inside of him.

Not just for a while, which would require continuous healing sessions to keep the condition in check.

Though I hadn’t said anything to anyone, not even Amelia, part of me wondered if I could actually heal the frenzy. Permanently.

“I deeply apologize for this incident, Dr. Green,” the kind old man said as he lay back on the table, bringing my thoughts back. “I don’t know what came over me.”

“It’s alright, sir. I understand. Your condition is difficult to deal with. Setbacks like this are to be expected.”

I held my hands over him and began our healing session, searching out the stain the frenzy left on his body, his mind, and focusing on clearing it.

“Dr. Green…” he said as I worked. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to know more about your wolf. I had heard that you didn’t have one.”

I sighed. “Well, for a long time, sir, I didn’t. I really was just a wolfless Omega, like everyone’s been saying. The lowest of the low.”

He nodded, understanding what I meant. Omegas were the lowest class in any pack, but a wolfless? That was even lower.

Wolfless Omegas were the ones even other Omegas looked down on.

“That must have been a difficult life to lead.”

His simple compassion almost brought tears to my eyes, and I had to clear my throat before speaking again.

“Yes, it really was. But then…”

I thought back to just a few short months ago, on all the events that lead me to the clinic. And how that led me to discovering not only my wolf but also my healing abilities. And my true calling in life.

“I trained as a healer, because I loved learning about medicines and tonics, and how to help people. And one day here at the clinic, my abilities just suddenly emerged.

“And so did my wolf.”

The Royal Alpha was silent for a moment. Then he said, “After meeting you, I was curious about your abilities. My wife had them as well, you know, and they are incredibly rare. I wondered if maybe you were somehow related to her because of that.”

My hands froze, and I stared at him. “What??”

“Indeed. You see, the fact that your healing abilities emerged later in life, and that your wolf only revealed itself after that, directly mirrors the way these things have manifested in my wife’s family for some time.

“I was fairly certain that you might somehow be a Royal, Dr. Green.”

His words left me completely stunned, and very confused.

Me, the wolfless Omega, actually a Royal? How could that possibly be?

“After seeing your wolf just now, I am growing more and more certain that you are somehow of royal descent. Healing abilities and a silver wolf? Far too much of a coincidence otherwise.”

I shook my head. “That…I’m sorry, that just doesn’t make any sense. I know I grew up as an orphan, but the idea of somehow being of royal descent…I’m struggling to believe that.”

He nodded. “It is a lot to take in, I’m sure. But if you’ll allow it, I’d like to have some tests run. May I have a piece of your hair?”

The thought of being related to the Royal family went directly against everything I’d ever known about myself.

But finally I decided to go along with his request, and put a few strands of my hair in a small bag as soon as I finished our healing session.

He took it with a smile, thanking me, clearly feeling confident about what the tests would show.

I wasn’t so sure, and didn’t hold out much hope. The fact that I had healing abilities and a silver wolf like many Royals was just a coincidence.

The Royal Alpha was a very kind old man, but he was also confused and struggling with his condition.

I decided he was simply mistaken.

He had to be.

…Right?
