Chapter 1
James Smith glared at me with a twisted face, speaking to me with total disrespect, "Jane, if you don't behave yourself, I'll divorce you!"
I've heard this word for countless times over the years.
Every time, James forced me to back down, all to please my younger sister, Susan.
Whatever she wanted, I had to hand it over with both hands.
If I show even the slightest bit of unhappiness, James would criticize me, either directly or indirectly.
I used to feel bitter about it and would always argue with James.
I was his wife, so why did he always take my sister's side?
But later, I gave up hope.
Because in their hearts, there's only Susan.
So I started trying to please Susan.
Mom and Dad were happy and praised me for finally acting like a proper older sister.
And James nodded with satisfaction, saying he'd treat me better from now on.
But they don't know that I don't have much time left.
Uterine cancer, stage IV.
When I came home with my medical diagnosis, James didn’t pay any attention and threw a stack of documents at me.
"Jane, Susan's about to graduate. Be her experiment subject! Otherwise, she won't be able to graduate!"
"It'll be a disaster if she can't graduate! You're her sister, you should help her more."
I glanced at the divorce papers and looked at James carefully.
Actually, this wasn't the first time he'd brought this up. I just never responded before.
A year before Susan's graduation, they wanted me to be her experiment subject. If I didn't agree, James would kick me out of the house.
My parents kept threatening me, too, saying that if I didn't agree, they wouldn't let me stay home either.
Back then, I didn't want to be Susan's patient, so I proudly refused them.
But James looked at me with disappointment and yelled, "Susan, you're so heartless! When Susan was little, she injured both her legs trying to save you, and she's still in a wheelchair!"
"How did I end up marrying a woman like you? You disgust me! If you don't agree, then get out!"
Right now, James was humiliating me just like he did a year ago.
But I've figured it out now. I clutched my diagnosis and let out a bitter laugh.
"Go ahead and arrange it. I agree to be Susan's lab rat!"
He excitedly rushed out to tell Susan the good news.
And I looked at the divorce papers on the table and wrote my name without hesitation.
I've had enough of this marriage over the years.
Next, I'm going to leave them completely.
Soon, James ran back home. He looked at me, stunned for a moment, and asked, "Why are you still sitting here?"
I shook my head, stood up, and walked toward the door.
James frowned at me, feeling like I was acting strange today.
But he couldn't be bothered with me right now.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the hospital, saying as we walked, "Susan has prepared a full physical exam for you. Just do what she says!"
I wasn't listening to what he was saying. Once I entered the hospital, I wouldn't be able to make any decisions for myself anyway.
I just stared blankly at the scenery outside the window, feeling empty inside.
When we got to the hospital, Mom and Dad handed me a liability waiver and said, "Hurry up and sign it! Then Susan can start treating you right away!"
I obediently nodded and wrote my name.
Only then did Mom and Dad relax. They looked at me and said, "Don't blame your sister. After all, she became disabled in both legs trying to save you, so think of this as paying her back! Don't worry, once Susan graduates successfully, I'll give you some money to buy yourself something nice."
I glanced at Mom and Dad, my face even paler. "Forget it. I won't need it anymore."
