Axel no lloró ni pidió ayuda. Solo tenía una camisa ligera y desgarrada que no lo protegía del frío. Su cuerpo estaba tan cortado en tantos lugares que ya no podía sentir el escozor.

Al igual que su padre, había aprendido a soportar su dolor. Sabía que este sufrimiento no duraría para siempre.

Llegaría un día en que los licántropos tomarían el control de nuevo. Los licántropos gobernarían la tierra otra vez y los humanos pagarían por todo lo que le hicieron a él y a su familia.

Desde el rabillo del ojo, Axel notó una sombra acercándose. Solo había una antorcha encendida en el extremo de la granja, justo detrás del palacio del rey humano. Pero no era suficiente para ver quién se acercaba. Entrecerró los ojos y miró directamente hacia adelante.

No quería que su condición lo hiciera parecer débil. Era un licántropo, debía actuar como tal.

Pero cuando la sombra salió de la oscuridad y se adentró en la única luz que parpadeaba en el aire frío de la noche, Axel los reconoció.

Era Violet. La princesa humana se acercó con las manos bien escondidas bajo su capa.

—Axel, ¿tienes hambre? —preguntó, sus ojos azules brillando en la oscuridad.

Axel se burló. —No deberías estar aquí. No es seguro para ti.

—Pero tú estás aquí. Me protegerás —respondió ella con una sonrisa.

Axel sintió un profundo golpe en su corazón. Su sonrisa le recordaba tanto a su madre. Le traía paz, pero incluso a su corta edad, sabía que esto solo era una ilusión.

Violet era inocente ahora porque era joven, pero tan pronto como creciera, se volvería igual que sus crueles padres.

Violet sacó las manos de su capa y sacó un trozo de pan. —Guardé esto para ti de la mesa del comedor...

Axel quería rechazar la comida, pero su estómago gruñó. Necesitaba la comida. No podía recordar la última vez que había comido algo.

—Olvídalo. Vete a casa antes de que te enfríes —susurró mientras miraba el pan en su mano. Tenía mucha hambre.

Violet sacudió la cabeza y tomó el asunto en sus manos. Se acercó más a Axel y partió el pan entre sus suaves manos. Luego lo llevó a sus labios.

—Deberías comer para que puedas ser fuerte y guapo como un príncipe... —dijo ella con una gran sonrisa en su rostro.

Axel se negó, pero Violet era terca y decidida; al final, él comió de sus manos.

No era la primera vez que Violet le traía comida. Cada vez que tenía la oportunidad, guardaba un pedazo de su comida y se lo llevaba cuando nadie la veía.

Dejó el pan en su muslo y se puso de pie. Desabrochó su capa de sus hombros y la envolvió alrededor de él.

—Mamá dice que hará más frío en la noche. Deberías tenerla. —Sonrió satisfecha con su trabajo y reanudó alimentándolo.

Él apreciaba su amabilidad, pero no podía permitirse considerarla porque cada vez que la miraba, recordaba cómo su gente había engañado a su madre y destruido su hogar.

—Deberías irte a casa —siseó.

—No hasta que termines de comer —insistió ella con un pequeño ceño fruncido en su rostro.

Ese gesto se veía mal en su cara. No estaba hecha para llevar algo como un ceño fruncido.

—¿No tienes miedo de mí? —susurró Axel.

Violet sonrió y lo miró a los ojos. —Eres un príncipe. No puedo tener miedo de ti porque sé que no me harás daño.

Su respuesta añadió aún más dolor al endurecido corazón de Axel. ¿Podría Violet realmente ser diferente de los suyos?

—¡Tú ahí! —gritó de repente un guardia señalándolos.

La mano de Violet dejó de alimentar a Axel a mitad de camino mientras se giraba para ver qué estaba pasando.

Un guardia se apresuraba hacia ellos y sus padres estaban detrás de él.

Axel escupió la comida de su boca y miró con furia al guardia que se acercaba.

Antes de que el guardia pudiera llegar al centro, más se unieron a él y todos se apresuraron hacia los niños.

—¡Aléjate de ella, animal! —escupió el primero, apartando a Violet del lado de Axel.

El rey y la reina se acercaron. Estaban rojos de ira y la reina se apresuró a tomar a Violet del guardia.

—Oh, mi querida princesa, ¿estás herida? ¿Te tocó? ¿Estás bien? —preguntó. Movió a Violet inspeccionando cada centímetro de su piel en la tenue luz.

Los ojos de Violet titubearon con una nube de confusión ante las preguntas que su madre le lanzaba.

—Estoy bien, mamá. Axel no me hizo daño. No puede hacerme daño. ¡Es mi amigo! —declaró inocentemente.

La reina dejó escapar un suave suspiro y se volvió hacia su esposo. —¡Ha hechizado a mi bebé! —gimió abrazando a Violet cerca de su gran torso.

Los ojos del rey se entrecerraron y cerró la distancia entre él y Axel. Agarró al niño encadenado por el cuello y lo levantó más alto.

—¡Te atreves a poner tus sucias manos en mi preciosa hija! —Le dio dos fuertes bofetadas en las mejillas a Axel, su cuerpo temblando de ira.

—¡Animal! ¡Guardias, azoten a este tonto hasta que quede grabado en su cráneo que nunca debe asociarse con una princesa! —Escupió en la cara de Axel y lo dejó caer al suelo frío.

—¡No! ¡Padre, no! ¡No lo golpees! Es mi amigo. No hizo nada malo. ¡Solo estábamos hablando! —Violet trató de explicar, pero sus palabras cayeron en oídos sordos.

Los guardias que habían estado ansiosos por azotar al niño licántropo levantaron sus látigos y ejecutaron la orden sin pestañear.

Axel había sido azotado en varias ocasiones, pero el que recibió esta vez, nunca lo había anticipado; por primera vez, gritó de dolor.

Pero el rey y los guardias se rieron, disfrutando de su sufrimiento.

—¡Dejen de golpearlo, es mi amigo! ¡Dejen de golpearlo! —Violet tenía lágrimas en los ojos mientras luchaba en los brazos de su madre, rogándoles que dejaran en paz al pobre Axel, pero nadie la escuchó.

—¡Llévenla a su habitación! Quiero ver esto —dijo la reina, y un guardia se apartó y arrastró a Violet.

Ella continuó gritando, llorando y rogándoles que dejaran en paz a Axel, pero el guardia solo se preocupaba por llevársela.

—¡Esto te enseñará a mantener esos dedos viscosos para ti mismo! ¡Pequeña plaga! —se rió la reina mientras veía a Axel ser azotado.

Axel fue golpeado tan fuerte que su cuerpo se entumeció. Sus ojos estaban hinchados y su piel ensangrentada, pero se aferró a su conciencia.

Quería observar bien a todos ellos. Quería recordarlos para que el día en que la diosa volviera a sonreírle, pudiera vengarse.

Mientras el látigo caía sobre su piel, hizo un voto silencioso de causarles la misma cantidad de dolor que le causaron a él.
