Astrid
As sombras se moveram antes de mim.
Elas deslizaram entre as árvores, se esticando de maneira antinatural pelo chão da floresta. O ar parecia espesso, úmido e errado. Meus pés batiam contra a terra enquanto eu corria, respirando de forma rápida e irregular. Galhos rasgavam meus braços, mas eu não parava. Não podia parar.
Algo estava atrás de mim. Observando. Perseguindo.
Eu não ousava olhar para trás.
Então vieram os sussurros. Baixos e distantes no começo, mas crescendo, se enrolando ao meu redor como um sopro frio contra minha pele.
"Astrid."
Engoli em seco, avançando, com meu coração batendo forte contra minhas costelas. As árvores se estendiam interminavelmente à frente, um labirinto implacável de escuridão. Minhas pernas queimavam, mas eu continuava correndo, alimentada pelo medo que agarrava meu peito.
Então eu vi.
Um lobo enorme estava na clareira à frente, bloqueando meu caminho. Sua pelagem era escura como a meia-noite, misturando-se às sombras como se tivesse nascido delas. Olhos da cor de brasas ardentes se fixaram nos meus, brilhando com algo que eu não entendia.
Eu parei de repente, o peito arfando.
Ele deveria ter atacado. Deveria ter avançado contra mim, mostrado seus dentes, feito algo.
Mas não fez.
Em vez disso, o lobo abaixou a cabeça.
Não em agressão.
Não em aviso.
Ele se curvou.
Como um servo a uma rainha.
Um arrepio frio percorreu minha espinha. O momento se estendeu, pesado com tensão, com algo antigo, algo poderoso. Minha respiração falhou.
Então tudo desapareceu.
Acordei com um sobressalto, o coração batendo forte contra minhas costelas. Meu quarto estava escuro, mas o pesadelo ainda me envolvia, espesso e pesado. Minha pele estava úmida de suor, minha respiração trêmula enquanto eu me sentava.
Era apenas um sonho. Apenas um—
Eu congelei.
O cheiro de terra úmida encheu meu nariz, o aroma rico e inconfundível da floresta ainda pairando no ar. Meus dedos se enroscaram nos lençóis, mas então eu senti. Uma picada aguda no meu braço.
Arranquei os cobertores. Minha respiração ficou presa na garganta.
Ali, na minha pele, estavam três arranhões longos e finos.
Frescos.
Reais.
Eu inspirei devagar e soltei o ar, tentando acalmar meu coração. Era apenas um pesadelo. Um pesadelo estúpido e vívido.
Os arranhões? Eu devo ter feito isso a mim mesma enquanto dormia. Talvez eu tivesse o hábito de andar dormindo e tropeçar em coisas aleatórias. Sim, isso fazia sentido. Eu não ia começar a pensar que meus sonhos podiam me tocar na vida real.
Sacudindo a cabeça, balancei as pernas para fora da cama e me levantei. Meu corpo estava rígido, como se eu realmente tivesse passado a noite correndo pela floresta. Rolei os ombros e afastei o pensamento, indo para o banheiro.
Ao ligar o chuveiro, vi meu reflexo no espelho—mesmo cabelo castanho ondulado, mesmos olhos escuros, mesma garota que estava descobrindo sua vida um passo de cada vez. Eu tinha dezoito anos, estava no último ano do ensino médio e vivendo o que deveria ser uma vida bastante normal.
Exceto que normal nunca realmente pareceu certo para mim.
Eu não lembrava muito antes de ser adotada aos oito anos. Apenas flashes—noites frias, rostos borrados, o som de alguém chamando meu nome em uma voz que eu não conseguia identificar. Meus pais adotivos, Tom e Renee Monroe, me acolheram, me deram um lar, uma vida. Eles eram boas pessoas, e eu os amava.
Mas sempre houve algo faltando. Uma lacuna no meu passado que ninguém podia preencher.
Afastei-me do espelho e entrei no chuveiro, deixando a água quente lavar a inquietação persistente. Quando terminei, me sentia mais como eu mesma. Vesti um par de jeans e um moletom ajustado, prendi meu cabelo em um rabo de cavalo bagunçado e peguei minha bolsa antes de sair do quarto.
O cheiro de café e torradas me atingiu assim que entrei na cozinha.
"Bom dia, querida," meu pai cumprimentou por trás do jornal, me dando uma olhada rápida por cima dos óculos. "Você parece que mal dormiu."
"Valeu, pai," murmurei, pegando uma fatia de torrada.
Minha mãe já estava no balcão, preparando seu café do jeito que ela gostava—com muito açúcar e pouco leite. "Estudando até tarde?" ela perguntou, levantando uma sobrancelha.
"Algo assim," murmurei, sem estar realmente com disposição para explicar por que eu parecia que tinha acabado de sobreviver a um filme de terror.
Eu não ia contar a eles sobre o sonho. Ou sobre os arranhões.
"Bem, coma algo antes de sair," disse minha mãe, tomando um gole de seu café. "E lembre-se, vamos jantar juntos hoje à noite. Nada de treinos, nada de planos de última hora. Só tempo em família."
"Entendi," respondi com a boca cheia de torrada antes de pegar minha mochila e sair.
A viagem até a escola foi rápida, minha playlist habitual tocando alto nos alto-falantes enquanto eu tentava afastar os últimos resquícios do meu sonho. Quando estacionei no estacionamento, a visão familiar da Eastwood High me acalmou.
Normal.
Eu só precisava me concentrar no normal.
Joguei a mochila sobre o ombro e entrei, me esgueirando pelos corredores lotados até chegar à minha primeira aula. Mas no segundo em que empurrei a porta, meu estômago revirou.
Lá, encostada na lateral da mesa do Jason, estava Bianca.
A namorada do Jason.
Ou o que quer que ela fosse para ele.
Os dedos bem cuidados dela estavam enterrados no cabelo dele, seu corpo praticamente moldado contra o dele, e Jason—Jason não estava exatamente afastando ela.
Eu congelei por meio segundo, apertando a alça da minha mochila um pouco mais antes de me forçar a entrar como se não tivesse acabado de ver algo que definitivamente não queria ver.
Jason e Bianca. Eu não sabia como, mas de alguma forma, eles estavam juntos.
Jason tem sido meu melhor amigo desde que eu era pequena, e embora eu costumasse sentir algo por ele, não sei se ele já sentiu o mesmo.
Até que um dia ele me convidou para ir à casa dele—eu pensei que seria só nós dois—até que ele mencionou casualmente que sua namorada também viria.
Namorada???

Eu devia ter sabido. Jason sempre foi amigável, tranquilo, o tipo de cara que as pessoas naturalmente gostam. Então, claro, Bianca se enrolou nele como uma cobra na primeira oportunidade que teve.
Revirando os olhos, passei por eles e fui direto para meu assento, me forçando a ignorar o jeito como os lábios de Bianca se curvaram em um sorriso presunçoso.
Eu odiava vê-la. Ela era exatamente o tipo de garota que achava que o mundo girava em torno dela—rica, bonita e uma verdadeira garota má. E, claro, ela tinha seu pequeno clube de fãs.
Do outro lado da sala, suas seguidoras estavam sentadas com seus namorados, rindo de algo em seus celulares. Ótimo.
Esse ia ser um dia longo.
Quando a aula terminou, eu consegui ficar fora de problemas, mas Bianca simplesmente não conseguia se controlar.
Enquanto eu pegava minha mochila, a voz dela ecoou, doce e envenenada.
"Cuidado, Astrid. Do jeito que você fica rondando Jason, as pessoas podem pensar que você é o cachorrinho dele."
Eu parei no meio do caminho.
Que porra ela acabou de dizer?
Lentamente, me virei para encará-la, minha expressão neutra, mas meus dedos se contraíam ao meu lado.
Jason estava bem ali. Ele ouviu. Ele viu o jeito como Bianca sorriu, esperando uma reação.
E ele apenas ficou lá.
Nem uma palavra. Nem uma única maldita palavra.
Meu sangue fervia.
Sem olhar mais para nenhum dos dois, me virei e saí da sala pisando firme.
