Chapter 1

"Wait!" The gurgling voice called out to me. A claw tore at the top of my ankle; I winced at the sharp pain but kept going. Opening the heavy door to the outdoors, I ran towards the tree line, which wasn't far. This area was usually safe, full of guards, but many were absent. I didn't question it; this was my only chance.

Chapter 2

My back stopped at the base of a vast dead tree. My forehead was bleeding, and there was no way I could walk to a stream to wash the blood off. If there was even a stream nearby. My father was connected to life support machines, with tubes coming out of his arms, chest, and mouth. He didn't even look the same anymore. There was no light in his eyes, no golden glow to his skin. He had been there too long, and his beard was tangled in the wires.
