Alice and Robert belonged to important families, although they had known each other since they were children, they did not see each other again until they learned that they were engaged. Robert refused to marry her, as he neither loved her nor knew her. When Alice learned that Robert did not want that marriage, she was relieved, as she did not want to marry him either and loved another man, so she appealed to her parents to annul the engagement, but they refused, as if they refused it would seem that they were more important and powerful, so the Taylors had to honor that engagement. Everything went on until the day of the wedding and once celebrated, Robert vented his anger against young Alice for forcing him to marry her and not refuse as he did.
